What is the Wolverhampton Art Teachers Network?

Faced with challenges from the government, social and political agendas and the market; art and art education are placed in a precarious position in which access to creative and artistic activities and learning is declining or devalued. The impacts of this upon creative organisations, schools, further and higher education is evident, with a significant drop in students opting for or pursuing art and design subjects.

In response to this, in 2016 the Wolverhampton arts teachers network was formed in conjunction with the Wolverhampton Art Gallery. We are aiming to open out facilities, workshops, guest speaker events and mentoring to both teaching staff and students in the region and beyond. Working collaboratively to host events and discuss practice and approaches to fostering creativity.

2016-17 Network Events

Last year we collaboratively hosted a variety of events, workshops and opportunities for teachers including:

  • Curator Talk and tour of ARTIST ROOMS: Roy Lichtenstein exhibition.
  • Exhibition tour and workshop led by artist Micheal Brennand-Wood.
  • Tours of the Degree Show.
  • Print Club – a free 10 week print workshop for members of the network.

In 2017-18 we hope to build the network further, with more members and events.
